DECADES-OLD SINGING CONTEST, ‘Tawag Ng Tanghalan’ makes a grand comeback, and now on as one of the segments on ABS-CBN’s noontime show, IT’S SHOWTIME in an effort to have a big share on TV ratings against rival EAT BULAGA’s ‘Kalye Serye.’
The show debuted on Saturday, January 2, and discovered its first winner, Michelle of Davao City, after besting 3 other contestants from other regions, Luzon, Visayas, and Metro Manila. Metro Manila’s contestant failed to impress the judges and was the first victim of the “Gong,” an abrupt decision to not allow a contestant to continue when s/he is out of tune.
The board of judges is headed by composer Manny Valera, and includes director Edgar Mortiz, singer-songwriters Yeng Constanstino, Nyoy Volante, and Rico J. Puno. Mortiz is a product of the 1968 version of ‘Tawag ng Tanghalan.’
The show, which previously aired on radio has produced a lot of big names in the industry already including Pepe Pimentel, and Superstar Nora Aunor, among others. The then 14-year old lass from Bicol, Nora Aunor won the 1967 version of the show with her winning piece, ‘Moonlight Becomes You.’ The winning paved a way to her grand career in showbiz.
Obviously, the show’s move, as well as its recent reformatting aims to combat the popularity of Eat Bulaga, which has been dominating the noontime show at 30-50 percent ratings compared to Showtime’s single-digit ratings for months already.
Showtime suffered from a major ratings loss, and remains having a hard time getting a share on TV viewership nationwide because of the mass acceptance of Kalye Serye.
Kalye Serye features the hit tandem of actor Alden Richards and Dubsmash characer Maine Mendoza known as AlDub, and the three grandmothers acted by comedians Jose Manalo, Wally Bayola, and Paolo Ballesteros.
Last year, Showtime resorted to getting a popular YouTube character, ‘Pastillas Girl’ to combat AlDub but it barely helped the show’s ratings.
‘Tawag ng Tanghalan’ airs on Showtime Mondays to Saturdays at noon.
