Devouring Beggar’s Chicken at Jasmine, New World Makati Hotel

Jasmine - New World Makati Hotel

NOTHING IS MORE exciting than devouring a unique chicken specialty than it is at Jasmine, a restaurant at New World Makati Hotel, I guess. Aside from it is flavored with meticulously-prepared, great tasting ingredients, it has a very rich history that one can taste its very soul but only after some hard work.

Maybe “hard work” is an overstatement but little did we know that some skills in carpentry was necessary before we could have a taste of the famous Beggar’s Chicken, wrapped in dough, and cooked slowly in an oven for more than four hours.

As the specialty was served in our table, we were given the wooden hammer, and instructed to start hammering the upper part of the dough with care, until the chicken meat wrapped in lotus leaves is revealed. That wasn’t that hard, yes, but the feeling of exerting an effort before tasting the famed chicken adds up to the beauty of dining at Jasmine, which is known for its authentic Chinese cuisine, and one of The Philippine Tatler’s Top 20 Restaurants of 2016.

Beggar’s Chicken derived its name from a story of a beggar who once buried chicken into the ground for next day’s consumption. But fate had a different plan as fire hit his place for several hours, and when the beggar looked for ‘his chicken,’ it is not but a well-cooked one, tastier than commonly cooked ones. This has inspired Jasmine chefs for this specialty, says Jannette Delgado, the hotel’s director of sales and marketing during our visit at Jasmine. Jannette and the hotel’s social media manager, Kye, entertained us, and provided us infos about their offerings during our lunch, in between stories on tourism, and yes, the much-heated Philippine politics prior to the May 9 polls.

Executive Chinese Chef Wong Kam On expertly prepares Beggar’s Chicken using the freshest ingredients and traditional techniques. Sought after for its customary presentation, aromas and savory flavors, Beggar’s Chicken is offered for lunch and dinner, priced at P1,680. You just have to call the hotel +63 2 811 6888 (ext. 3338) in advance if you wish to order one as they have limited availability per day.
