SPAIN MADE history today by crowning a trans woman as Miss Universe Spain 2018, the first trans woman to win in the history of a local pageant under the Miss Universe franchise. She is Angela Ponce.
Ponce bested 21 other ladies in the competition. Miss Universe 2017 Sofia del Prado crowned Ponce in a historic pageant finals held on June 29 at Palau Firal I de Congressos de Tarragona.
Ponce first made headlines when she competed in the Miss World Spain 2015 pageant but lost to Mireia Lalaguna who was eventually crowned Miss World 2015 in Sanya, China.
In a 2015 interview after her first try at the local pageant, Ponce said she’s still a queen saying, “I have the regional crown on my head and I will keep fighting to make us seen, to make us heard and to demonstrate that I am already a queen with my own crown.”
The 26-year old lass got aware of her sexuality at age 11 and she’s thankful of the support of her parents from the very beginning, saying her father sat with her as she played with her dolls.
Should the Miss Universe Organization (MUO) allow Ponce’s participation in the international pageant, which we believe MUO must, Ponce will be the first trans woman to compete with the fiercest ladies from around the world, including the Philippines’ bet, Catriona Gray — and it would be a beautiful history in the making.
Ponce’s presence in Miss Universe should be taken positively by the organization, if we may say. It’s 2018, and it’s about time to welcome trans woman in one of the most significant pageants in the world today that, on its beautiful little ways, has been making an impact to the world, and has inspired millions of supporters especially from the LGBTQ community.
