KEN CHAN, BEST KNOWN for his challenging role as a transgender woman in ‘Destiny Rose’ is up to another challenge — as an intellectually-challenge young father in ‘My Special Tatay’ starting tomorrow, September 3 on GMA Network.
The actor is all set to make another mark on the small screen as he tackles one of his toughest roles to date as Boyet, a man with Mild Intellectual Disability with Mild Autism Spectrum Disorder. This original series is GMA Network’s newest afternoon program that will tackle how a father’s love for his child conquers life’s challenges.
Unlike in Destiny Rose where he uses make up, costume, and several other props to give justice to his role, My Special Tatay is different, according to the actor. “I only use my body without other props as a tool” to portray the role of Boyet, says Ken, and emphasized his disability is just mild, and could be mistaken as normal at a glance, unlike the most common portrayals of severe disabilities in movies and television series.
Grateful for his new lead role, Ken told ElysPlanet.PH during our recent meet up on August 31, this is a realization of one of his dream roles he once told this blogger years ago. Oozing with excitement for the role, Ken said his preparation for this one is kinda different as this is more challenging than her role in Destiny Rose.
“Mas doble ang kaba ko for this show dahil kailangan nating ipaintindi sa viewers kung ano ba talaga ang pinagdaraanan ng mga taong may intellectual disability,” he said.
Ken underwent several workshops and together with the production and creative teams of the soap, they immersed themselves in talking with people with mild intellectual disability to better understand them.
Also in the cast are Jestoni Alarcon as Edgar Villaroman, the rich father of Boyet; Teresa Loyzaga as Olivia Salcedo-Villaroman, the domineering wife of Edgar; Carmen Soriano as Soledad Villaroman, the conservative yet empowered mother of Edgar and grandmother of Boyet; Lilet as Isay, the caring mother of Boyet; Candy Pangilinan as Chona Mariano, the cousin of Isay. Also featuring in special guest roles are the following: Matt Evans as young Edgar; Empress Schuck as young Isay; Valeen Montenegro as young Olivia; Ashley Rivera as young Chona.
Joining them in this endearing project are multi-talented artists: Arra San Agustin as Carol Flores, the best friend of Boyet; Rita Daniela as Audrey Palomares, a childhood friend of Boyet; Jillian Ward as Odette Villaroman, the daughter of Edgar and Olivia; Bruno Gabriel as Orville Villaroman, the son of Edgar and Olivia; JK Giducos as Dekdek, the best friend of Boyet.
Despite his limitations and the judgment of the people around him, Boyet, who is lovingly raised by his single mother Isay (Lilet), grew up as a kind-hearted man with a positive outlook in life. His life turns upside down when he finds out that he has a child. How will he survive the challenges of the world while being a good father?
Under the helm of Director LA Madridejos together with second unit director Conrado Peru, don’t miss the heart-warming story of My Special Tatay beginning September 3 on GMA Afternoon Prime, just before Wowowin.
