Miss Grand International 2016 is close to crowning its new queen with the Philippines’ Nicole Cordoves vying to win the country’s first MGI crown but it seems that our representative will be having a hard fight as there are a lot of strong contenders this year.
We watched today’s preliminary competition as it was broadcast on Facebook Live from Las Vegas in the US. Production-wise, though MGI 2016 is not that super glamourous compared with Miss Universe, it is far better compared with other newly-born beauty contests today. That actually makes MGI more popular to pageant fans all over the world compared with the new pageants.
Though picking the winner/s remain a puzzle for most of us, as sash factor seems not working well for this pageant whose last year’s winner seemed to have been based on the life story of the candidate — who months later passed on her crown to her runner-up, now the reigning queen. Yet, when it comes to beauty and performance during the preliminary alone, this year’s batch has a lot of contestants people would be willing to put their high hopes for.
Stand out for me are the following candidates who I consider as threats to the Philippines’ Cordoves.
Miss Grand Philippines Nicole Cordoves did well. Even before the prelims, I liked her National Costume and how she plays things for the competition — her queenly grace emphasized by her not too flamboyant looks and how she performs on stage — I loved all that. That’s very Filipina and that sets her apart from her competitors who are used to being Miss Universe-y. Her pictorials are beautiful except for that swimsuit photo posted on MGI website. I liked how she handled herself on the catwalk during the prelims especially when with that beautiful sways and kicks during her swimsuit performance. Her gown is so-so but she’s gracefully owned it. Give her the microphone during the final question and answer and she’ll definitely bring home the crown. Trust me.
But this is a competition and nothing is final until the results are in. Basing on what transpired that were shared with the public alone, we handpicked a few who will make it hard for Nicole to bring home the crown and they are the following stunning ladies:
1.) Indonesia’s Ariska Putri Pertiwi. She has been making big waves online even before the preliminary, not because of her fans alone but of that beautiful face and grace, many of other Indonesian beauties failed to showcase before. I loved her performance both in the evening gown and during the swimsuit number as much as I loved her beautiful national costume. If I were to pick aside from Nicole, Miss Indonesia will be my Miss Grand International 2016.
2.) Venezuela remains our toughest competition in terms of beauty pageants and no one is denying that. Miss Grand Venezuela Debora Paola Medina is out to prove that right. A model and a dancer, this lady champions education in her home country and that’s just simply a beautiful thing.
3.) With curves like that (34-24-35) and an experience in the modeling agency as a catwalk guru under her belt, Ukraine’s Veronika Mykhailyshyn is also a big threat. I liked her kind of beauty and there’s something in her that makes her different from the bunch of beautiful contenders.
4.) Needless to say, Asian beauties are stand out for this batch and if I were to pick another beauty, it would be Thailand’s Supaporn Malisorn. Stunning in her own right and with her performance during the prelims, the lady only proves that she’s another strong contender to consider. I wouldn’t mind having her in the Top 3.
5.) Completing my top contenders’ list is Madison Sara Anderson of Puerto Rico. That beauty.
Then there’s Romania’s Ioana Mihalache. She is more of a model material for me than a beauty queen but who cares? This lady could be the next face of Miss Grand International.
Other beauties to watch out for
No, we won’t settle for our top choices. We don’t have the right to. The big names in the pageant world are here to prove they are the real queen makers. Latina beauties Paulina Flores of Mexico, Priscila Howard of Peru, and Renata Sena of Brazil are among the sexiest ladies in the batch. Then there’s Colombia’s Juliana Florez who seems ready to avenge fellow Colombian beauty queen, Adriana Gutierrez from her Miss Universe 2016’s runner-up finish to the Philippines’ Pia Wurtzbach.
But there are also other Asian beauties who will try to change our minds. Miss Malaysia Ranmeet Jassal is equally stunning. Then there’s this beautiful model from Macau, Hio Man Chan. But who would ignore the most beautiful black contestant in the batch? Yes, folks, I am referring to South Sudan’s Teresa Yuol.
