Alex Eala beat Australia’s Emerson Jones 6-4, 6-3 in the round of 32 of the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open on Tuesday night, November 3. The match lasted 1 hour and 23 minutes at the Victoria Park Tennis Stadium in Causeway Bay. The tournament is a WTA 250 event, the lowest tier of the main women’s tour, and it’s Eala’s last tournament of 2026.
Eala is seeded second in Hong Kong and came in at a career-high world No. 17.
A Swap Before the Match
Jones wasn’t the opponent Eala was supposed to play. The draw had her against American Alycia Parks, but Parks withdrew with a shoulder injury. That cancelled a rubber match. Parks came back from a set down to beat Eala 0-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of the Australian Open in January, and Eala beat her 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 in Toronto in August.
Jones, 18, is ranked No. 133. She had lost to Russia’s Alexandra Shubladze in the final round of qualifying, 6-4, 6-2. She got into the main draw as a lucky loser, which is a player who loses in qualifying but is moved into the draw when someone withdraws. It was the first time she and Eala had played each other.
Ten Breaks in 19 Games
Eala took the first set in 44 minutes and the second in 39. The scoreline looks tidy, but the stats sheet shows how often both players lost their serve. There were 10 breaks of serve across 19 games. Eala converted six of her eight break points, and Jones converted four of seven.
Each player hit one ace and four double faults. Eala got 64 percent of her first serves in and won 62 percent of those points. Jones got 59 percent in and won 53 percent. On second serve, Eala won 38 percent of points to Jones’ 33 percent. Overall, Eala won 63 points to Jones’ 53.
This was Eala’s first match since her quarterfinal loss to Diana Shnaider at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, where she won the first set and then lost in almost three hours.
What Eala Said
In her post-match interview, Eala said she was happy with how she played and with the full crowd at Victoria Park. She also said she hopes to play more matches against Jones in the future.
Valentová Next
Last year, Eala reached the second round in Hong Kong after Katie Boulter retired mid-match. To go further this time, she has to get past Tereza Valentová of the Czech Republic in the round of 16. Valentová is 2-0 against Eala. She beat her 6-1, 6-2 at the Japan Open in Osaka in October 2025 and 7-6, 6-1 at the Qatar Open in Doha in February.
