Movie Review: ‘4 Days’ featuring Mikoy Morales, Sebastian Castro

4 Days Movie at QCinema

ADOLFO ALIX’S ‘4 DAYS,’ starring Mikoy Morales and Sebastian Castro, follows two college dorm mates and ‘best friends’ who fall in love while trying to stay in the closet.

Mikoy plays Mark, whose love and confusion have only grown since he first laid eyes on Derek (Sebastian). Mark falls for him while Derek cycles through girlfriends. They eventually acknowledge their feelings through a beautiful ‘ketchup’ analogy you’ll love, but stay lovers only within the walls of their dorm room — hence the conflict. The film’s story unfolds across just four days, one Valentine’s Day each year, in Mark and Derek’s college lives.

The film explores the beauty of first love and the conflicts of closeted gay romance through Mark’s eyes, focusing on his pain, his confusion, and his need for validation.

What I love most is its sensitivity — how it makes viewers actually feel that pain, through long silences, unconventional shots, and playful camera focus throughout.

Sebastian brings good camera presence and real chemistry with Mikoy — the role suits him well.

Calling Mikoy believable is an understatement. It’s rare for an actor to pull viewers into every step of his journey the way Mikoy does. We were Mark. We are Mark, all the way through.

The film is as much about Mark as it is about Mikoy. What ‘4 Days’ lacks in balancing the flavors of first love — too fixed on inner conflict in almost every frame — it makes up for with its soundtrack, some of it Mikoy’s own compositions, plus gorgeous aerial shots of UP Diliman. Together, it adds up to a genuine love story.

In case you didn’t know, Mikoy is among the finest products of GMA Network’s 2012 reality search ‘Protege.’ In ‘4 Days,’ he shows off both his acting chops and his musicianship — he’s bound to make it big.

Catch ‘4 Days’ at Greenbelt 1 and Trinoma Wednesday, October 18 onwards.
