THE SECOND BIGGEST continent is more than just vast deserts, animal fur, and precious minerals like diamonds. A giant landmass bordered by a few standout water attractions, this 30,220,000 square-kilometer continent is home to many must-visit sites and must-try activities for every wanderer. The world is full of wonders, and Africa offers more than the Americas, Europe and Asia combined on that front. Here are a few exciting things to do and places to visit on the continent.

1. Visit the pyramids of Egypt and other historical sites.

In case you forgot, human evolution started in Africa. The Egyptians who built the impressive pyramids were already enjoying civilization more than 5,000 years ago. Beyond monuments and tombs, you can also visit the magnificent paintings in southern African caves and learn about our bi-pedal ancestors at Tanzania’s Oldupai Gorge.

2. Attend Gerewol and other festivals.

Many countries in Africa don’t accept or tolerate homosexuality, which makes it interesting that Niger holds a festival centered on male beauty. The Gerewol Festival is when male Africans are adorned with costumes and colorful make-up to compete with each other. With several thousand ethnic groups on the continent, there are also thousands of unique tribal festivals, each one a distinct combination of vibrant color and upbeat music that makes every celebration a little more festive.

3. Take Moroccan and other culinary tours.

A recent survey commissioned by the World Food Travel Association found that more than 30 percent of the 170 million leisure travelers in the United States choose trips that include culinary tours and related activities. Morocco’s Gourmet on Tour lets you take part in the whole experience, from shopping for ingredients at the market to preparing and cooking the food yourself.

4. Shop in local bazaars and markets.

Africa has many market squares where you can pick up local products like sandals and colorful fabrics. In Morocco’s main square of Djemaa el-Fna, look for hard-to-resist finds like leather tribal bags and knitted jackets.

5. Try adventures at Victoria Falls and other attraction sites.

Africa is often underrated for its thrills, when in reality the whole continent spells adventure. Beyond swimming to the edge of the world’s largest waterfall, you can try bungee jumping off a bridge, sand-boarding, and white-water rafting.

6. Explore Africa on two wheels.

Fatbiking is another activity that tests your physical strength, stamina and endurance. Exploring the continent on two wheels is a great way to take in the scenery, stay eco-friendly, and get closer to the locals.

7. Hike Mt. Kilimanjaro and other mountains.

Mountain climbing is exhilarating precisely because it challenges you physically and rewards you with a breathtaking view at the end. Beyond Mt. Kilimanjaro, you can also take on the Atlas Mountains, Mount Kenya, the Drakensberg range, the Simien Mountains, and the Rwenzori Mountains.

8. Pamper yourself in Seychelles and other gorgeous beaches.

Africa isn’t just dry lands and deserts. It also boasts several gorgeous beaches, like the one in Praslin, Seychelles — a hot spot known for its ultra-luxurious private islands. Add the idyllic beaches of Zanzibar and South Africa to the list as well.

9. Go on a wildlife safari.

“Safari” is a Swahili word that means “to journey.” The idea sounds exciting, but the thought of coming face to face with lions, tigers and other wild animals is a little unnerving. A hot air balloon safari makes the journey safe, and it belongs on the list of things to try before you die.

10. Volunteer in a community work.

Learning about Africa’s culture and traditions becomes more meaningful when you take part in volunteer work — living and working in communities, teaching kids, or helping build livelihood projects. Volunteering alongside locals has a way of helping us understand ourselves, and our value as humans, a little better.
