Miss Supranational 2016 Winners, Highlights

Joanna Eden of the Philippines made it to Top 25 of Miss Supranational 2016.

SATURDAY MORNING (December 3) is one of the most beautiful mornings for Filipino pageant fans, cheering on the Philippines’ Joanna Eden as she vies for the country’s second Miss Supranational crown, first won by Mutya Johanna Datul in 2013.

At exactly 3am today (Philippine time), 8pm in Poland where the final competition is being held as of this posting, fans from around the world are tuning in to watch the crowning of Miss Supranational 2016. Of the 71 contestants from five continents, only five will make the finals. Last year’s winner, Paraguay’s Stephania Stegman, will crown her successor.

Highlights (Live Updates)

The program opened with a bang, every lady gorgeous as they hit the ramp in national costumes designed by well-known names from their respective countries. The hosts kept the show moving well, and the stage itself is stunning — loved every detail, lighting included. The sound? Right up there with the Miss Universe production values.

The first award, Best in National Costume, went to Vietnam’s Kha Trang, for a heavy, elaborate costume the presenter made a point of noting.

Before the final night, contestants were judged across several categories, including Swimsuit, Evening Gown, and Miss Internet. The Miss Internet winner via Facebook advances to the Top 25, while the top vote-getter on Mobstar advances to the Top 10.

In the Facebook contest, the Philippines’ Joanna Eden leads with more than 80,000 likes, Miss Peru close behind, and Indonesia trailing in third.

The swimsuit segment was brief but gave the ladies enough time to show off.

The evening gown segment followed, elegant and classy as ever. Venezuela’s really starting to stand out for us — by far the strongest South American contender, alongside Argentina and Costa Rica. Colombia isn’t having a strong night, and Mexico’s just okay.

After the Top 25 announcement came the oddest part of the night — a sports segment. Not sure what the organizers were thinking, but putting that in the final show cheapened the whole production, honestly.

Next came the Top 10: Indonesia, Myanmar, India, Hungary, Venezuela, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Belarus, Poland, and Slovak Republic. Then the Top 5, ranked by how they handled the Question and Answer portion, from what I could tell. In the end, Miss India took home her country’s second crown. The Venezuelan beauty came in a close second, while the crowd favorite — and my personal pick from the five finalists — Miss Suriname finished second runner-up. Miss Sri Lanka, whose beauty I really admire, took third runner-up, and Miss Hungary rounded things out at fourth runner-up.

Overall, a good pageant, even with a production that faltered a bit in the middle before finding a strong finish. Congrats to all the winners, especially India on its second crown. Earlier tonight, Miss Supranational 2014, also from India, had plenty of visibility — she sat on the board of judges and co-presented tonight’s show. India clearly has a good relationship with the Miss Supranational organizers, and with results like this, that bond only looks set to grow stronger in the years ahead.

Till the next pageant, folks!
