Alex Eala’s US Open ended in the third round, beaten by her friend Iva Jovic for a third time this year. But New York wasn’t done with her.

In the two weeks since that loss, Eala has landed on the front page of one of the world’s biggest newspapers, sat across from three national news anchors, shown up in a viral video with one of the Philippines’ other breakout sports stars, and — as of this morning — become a genuine New York Fashion Week moment. None of it happened on a court.

Little Manila’s New Neighbor

The New York Times put Eala on the front page of its September 3 New York print edition under the headline “In Little Manila, This U.S. Open Redefines Love.” The story chronicled the watch parties and packed sports bars in Queens’ Filipino enclave every time she played — a Grand Slam story built around a neighborhood rather than a bracket. It’s the kind of coverage tennis players rarely get outside the results page.

She’s had practice explaining what that support means. After beating Oleksandra Oliynykova in the second round, she told reporters everybody represents something in their own way, and that she was proud to represent the Philippines specifically because so much of the crowd around her did too.

Three Anchors, One Table

The run also earned her a seat at the CBS Mornings table with Gayle King, Nate Burleson, and Norah O’Donnell, who asked about the pressure of representing a country and the attention she’s drawn from players like Venus Williams and Coco Gauff. She talked about growing up watching Gauff on TV — a near-peer she followed for years before ever sharing a draw with her. Asked what the moment meant, Eala kept it simple: a dream, she said, “is only a dream until it becomes a reality.”

The Clarkson Meetup

Somewhere in the middle of all this, Eala crossed paths with Jordan Clarkson — the Utah Jazz guard and the Philippines’ other most recognizable athlete abroad — for a sit-down ESPN turned into a short video titled “So proud of you.” Two of the most famous Filipinos in American sport, talking heritage and the cost of building a career while carrying a country most of their opponents never have to think about. Five years ago, that pairing would have felt improbable. Now it barely raises an eyebrow.

Front Row, Finally

The fashion interest wasn’t new. Eala shot a mystery cover at Condé Nast in late August, sparking rumors it could be Vogue, Allure, or Glamour, after Anna Wintour was overheard praising her at the US Open’s Roger Federer exhibition. What’s new is this morning: Eala turned up front row at Tory Burch’s Spring/Summer 2027 show during New York Fashion Week, in a red jacket and tan trousers, first spotted via Teen Vogue’s Instagram before it spread across every Filipino tennis account on the platform. She’s already made the leap from athlete to brand face once this year — Tory Burch is the first time fashion has claimed her on its own turf, rather than asking her to bring tennis along.

The Condé Nast cover may or may not surface. Either way, Eala’s celebrity has clearly outgrown her ranking — running through Queens watch parties, a CBS green room, and, now, a front-row seat at one of Fashion Week’s most photographed shows.
