Filipino actor Elijah Canlas spent the past six weeks fielding a rumor he never planned to confirm — until the rumor started answering itself. On Tuesday, September 1, in an interview with talent manager and entertainment vlogger Ogie Diaz on his YouTube show “Ogie Diaz Inspires,” Canlas confirmed what showbiz columnists had been circling since late July: he and actress and “Eat Bulaga!” host Miles Ocampo, together on and off since 2021, had broken up.
“As much as I’ve been trying to keep it private… I think it’s time for me to say that, yes, it’s true,” Canlas said, mixing English with Filipino.
Where the Rumor Actually Started
The speculation traces to a TikTok clip from a public market in La Union, showing Canlas with Kapuso singer-actress Thea Astley — a moment that, taken out of context, read to online audiences as more than it was. Diaz had already tried to get a straight answer out of both parties in early August, reaching out to Ocampo directly and getting silence. Canlas didn’t respond to him then either. A month of “may third party ba?” headlines followed, all of it built on a single video clip.
Canlas closed that door specifically. “There was no third party involved,” he said. “Miles would know it’s not true. People close to us would know that it’s not true.” He and Astley, by his account and hers, are simply longtime friends with a shared circle in La Union — not a storyline.
The Split Itself
What Canlas did confirm was more ordinary, and for that reason harder to say out loud: he and Ocampo had ended things mutually, a few months before he ever spoke to Diaz on camera. It wasn’t their first ending — the two dated from 2021, went public in 2022, split in 2023, and got back together in 2024, a reconciliation Canlas described as the part that made this breakup sting the way it did. “We got back together thinking, ‘this is it,'” he said. “We gave it our all, that’s what I can say… and we broke up mutually and very amicably. And there’s no hate, at least on my part.”
He didn’t offer more than that, and said as much on purpose — a decision to protect what was left of Ocampo’s privacy over what would have made for a cleaner headline. “Out of respect for Miles, I will always have love for her,” he said, adding a request that reads less like a publicist’s line than an actual ask: “I hope they go easy on Miles, go easy on me, and let us heal, basically.”
Why This Reads Differently From a Typical Confirmation
Canlas has spent 2026 building a career around people who don’t get to choose comfort over conviction — most visibly as martyred student leader Edgar “Edjop” Jopson in the upcoming Warner Bros. Philippines biopic “Edjop,” opening nationwide September 16.
