On September 16, Elijah Canlas opens nationwide as a man who died for his convictions. Regal Entertainment’s road trip comedy with him, meanwhile, now has its full cast.

Regal announced the cast of One for the Road on its social accounts on Saturday, August 22, 2026 — Canlas alongside JM Ibarra and Emilio Daez, directed and co-written by Kip Oebanda. On September 6, Regal completed the lineup, confirming Cup of Joe vocalist Gian Bernardino as the fourth lead. It’s a straightforward casting drop on its face. What makes it worth pausing on is the timing: Canlas is currently mid-promotion for Edjop, the Warner Bros. Pictures Philippines drama in which he plays Edgar “Edjop” Jopson, the student leader killed by military forces in 1982 for organizing against martial law — a role he’s called the most personally shaping of his career, arriving five years after the film went into production. He’s spent 2025 and 2026 building a filmography almost entirely out of people who paid a price for their principles, on-screen and, by his own account, off it too. One for the Road is the first thing on his slate in a while that doesn’t ask anything like that of him.

Who’s Actually in the Car

Canlas is the established name here by a wide margin — a Best Actor win at the Asian Film Festival in Rome for Kalel, 15, an international premiere at the Berlinale for Rumaragasa, a career built on roles with real stakes attached. His two co-stars got here on almost the opposite path.

JM Ibarra started as a housemate on Pinoy Big Brother: Gen 11 in 2024, the reality format that’s spent two decades turning ordinary Filipinos into recognizable names. He parlayed that into an on-screen partnership with fellow housemate Fyang Smith, a Cinemalaya credit, a spot in a Metro Manila Film Festival horror anthology, and — most recently — Almost Us, his first lead role, which opened in May 2026 and pulled in ₱23 million in its second week alone. Two years removed from a reality show, he’s now carrying box office numbers.

Emilio Daez took a different route in, but he’s not new to this specific director. He came up through the drama series Pamilya Sagrado and Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Collab Edition before landing his first-ever film role — as Ziggy Nicardo, a wealthy young business owner with a soft spot for the people working under him, in Kip Oebanda’s Bar Boys: After School (2025). Before any of it, he spent nearly two years as an investment banker, a detail that tends to surprise people more than his current résumé would suggest it should.

Gian Bernardino arrives from an entirely different lane. He’s a founding member and one of two lead vocalists of Cup of Joe, the pop rock band behind the chart-topping “Multo,” a career he’s been building since the group formed in 2018. Acting, though, predates the band by his own account — he’s called it his “first love,” tracing it back to watching television growing up in Qatar as the son of an overseas Filipino worker (OFW). He signed a solo artist deal with Viva Artists Agency and a separate film contract with Viva Films this past June, formally entering the industry as a solo act after a handful of earlier indie credits, including the 2023 QCinema short Microplastics and a supporting role in the 2021 streaming series Quaranthings. One for the Road, in which he plays Jomar, the fourth working-class friend in Oebanda’s ensemble, is his first film role under that Viva contract.

The Filmmaker Behind the Wheel

If Liway (2018) and Balota (2024) are Kip Oebanda’s prestige register — the former an acclaimed drama about a political prisoner during the Marcos dictatorship, the latter a Marian Rivera-led Cinemalaya entry — Bar Boys is his signature. The 2017 original became a cult favorite; its 2025 sequel, Bar Boys: After School, was an official entry at the 51st Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) — the country’s biggest annual film showcase, screening exclusively in cinemas each holiday season — where it won the festival’s top prize, the Fernando Poe Jr. Memorial Award for Excellence, grossed ₱58 million, and picked up ten award nominations overall. That’s also where Daez comes from: Oebanda cast him in that film’s world before this one. One for the Road isn’t Oebanda handing his slate to two total strangers — it’s a reunion with one actor from his own franchise, alongside a genuine first-timer in Ibarra.

There’s a thematic thread running through it, too. In a Rolling Stone Philippines interview around Bar Boys: After School, Oebanda talked about the working class being unable to reach its own potential “under the yoke of capitalism” — a line he tied directly to Daez’s character. One for the Road‘s own premise, per Regal’s release, centers four working-class friends breaking from their routines. It’s a lighter register than Liway, but not necessarily a different set of concerns.

Co-writer Victor Villanueva brings his own credential to the tone: Patay na si Hesus, the comedy-drama that built its reputation on finding humor inside grief without cheapening it.

What’s Confirmed, What Isn’t

The plot: four working-class friends leave their routines behind for a spontaneous road trip. Canlas plays Ariel, Daez plays Luke, Ibarra plays Garry, and Bernardino plays Jomar — the full lead cast, as of Regal’s September 6 announcement. No release date has been set yet — Regal’s “coming soon in cinemas” is the standard placeholder for a project that’s cast and written but not yet dated.

None of that changes the more interesting fact underneath it: right as Canlas is about to ask an audience to sit with a man who died for what he believed, he’s also making room for something that asks nothing of the kind. That’s not a contradiction. For an actor who’s built a whole pattern out of choosing weight, it might be the one deliberate exception.
