Star Cinema didn’t even get a full day of goodwill out of the announcement. On Wednesday, August 12, the studio dropped a screen-test clip introducing Always Yours, Never Mine — the fifth film pairing Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto, known collectively as JoshLia, a Philippine love team whose on-screen partnership dates back a decade. Within hours, the reunion had trended. So had the complaint that always seems to trail it: that Star Cinema is running the exact same play again, just with a new title card.

The Announcement, in Ninety Seconds

The clip itself is doing exactly what a screen test is supposed to do — sell the ache. Garcia and Barretto play a confrontation scene in which he confesses feelings for her while she’s involved with someone else. “Bakit ba pinagpipilitan mo ang sarili mo sa kanya?” he asks. “Kasi mahal ko siya,” she answers. “I wouldn’t be doing this kung hindi ko siya mahal.” The line already circulating on fan accounts — “‘Wag ako ang mahalin mo — iba” — is the kind of heartbreak bait Star Cinema has built an entire business model on.

Always Yours, Never Mine is directed by Cathy Garcia-Sampana and set to open in theaters September 30. It’s the pair’s follow-up to their 2024 reunion film Un/Happy for You, and it lands almost exactly a decade after their first project together, Vince and Kath and James, in 2016 — a run that’s since included Love You to the Stars and Back, Unexpectedly Yours, I Love You, Hater, and the series Block Z.

Garcia-Sampana isn’t a random hire for this either. Under her former name Cathy Garcia-Molina, she directed One More Chance and Close to You, two of the films now getting cited as evidence of exactly the pattern viewers are flagging.

The reunion also arrives about three weeks after Garcia’s brush with a separate, unrelated controversy: in mid-July, he drew online backlash for reposting a TikTok video sympathetic to Vice President Sara Duterte during her Senate impeachment trial, with screenshots also showing he’d followed her on Instagram before quietly unfollowing. He never addressed it publicly, and nothing about the fallout appears connected to this film’s rollout.

“Gasgas, Gamit, Paulit-Ulit”

That pattern is the actual story here, more than the reunion itself. Reaction to the announcement split almost immediately into two camps: people who want the ache regardless of how many times they’ve felt it, and people quoting the announcement back at Star Cinema as proof of a formula on autopilot.

One Threads comment summed up the second camp bluntly, calling the pairing’s work interchangeable — same cast, same story beats, same plot mechanics — and dismissing it as tired and repetitive, “welcome to Star Cinema’s universe.” Another commenter went further and did the studio’s homework for it, listing off a run of prior Star Cinema romances — Milan, One More Chance, Hello, Love, Goodbye, The Hows of Us, Alone/Together — as exhibits, arguing the studio keeps investing in whatever’s proven to sell rather than what’s actually new, and that Milan alone should have been the natural stopping point.

The pile-on continued in the replies: one commenter pointed to the recycled cast, production company, and even the same small rotation of directors as the real tell. It’s not a fringe take — variations of the same complaint are surfacing across TikTok and X threads reacting to the same clip, mostly from viewers who’ve watched this exact love team, or its Star Cinema cousins, hit the same emotional beats before.

The Formula Complaint Has a Counterargument, and It’s Financial

Here’s the thing the complaint mostly skips over: the “gasgas” formula has never once stopped making money, which is precisely why Star Cinema keeps running it back. Vince and Kath and James earned ₱123 million at the Philippine box office and Love You to the Stars and Back followed with ₱112 million, before Unexpectedly Yours — a film that wasn’t even a JoshLia-only vehicle, pairing them with Sharon Cuneta and Robin Padilla instead — pulled in ₱249 million worldwide. Garcia-Sampana’s own filmography, under either name, has produced the highest-grossing Filipino film of the year nine separate times.

That’s not a studio being lazy. That’s a studio running the only playbook it has actual proof works, in an industry where a swing at something genuinely new can just as easily flop and take a budget down with it. The audience complaint isn’t wrong that the beats repeat — but “repeat” and “reliable” are doing the same job on a balance sheet, and JoshLia’s decade-long track record is exactly why Star Cinema keeps calling them back for another round of the same heartbreak, rather than proof the studio has stopped trying.

Whether Always Yours, Never Mine actually breaks from the formula or just executes it well is the question the September 30 release will actually answer — screen tests are built to sell an ache, not to prove it’s a new one.
