Lea Salonga Will Play Bernarda Alba in Theatre Group Asia’s Filipino-Language Lorca, Opening February 2027

Lea Salonga as Bernarda Alba on TGA

Lea Salonga has played a lot of women the audience wants to protect. Kim in Miss Saigon, Fantine and Eponine in Les Misérables, even the Witch in Into the Woods, who is scary but mostly wants her daughter back. Next February she plays someone else entirely: a mother who locks her five daughters in the house for eight years and calls it respect for the dead.

Theatre Group Asia (TGA), the Manila company behind her last two stage outings, announced on its social media accounts that Salonga will take the title role in Ang Tahanan ni Bernarda Alba. It is the second production of TGA’s 2026-27 season, which opened with The Notebook: The Musical.

The Play Behind the Title

Ang Tahanan ni Bernarda Alba is the Filipino-language version of The House of Bernarda Alba, the last play by Spanish writer Federico García Lorca, finished in 1936, the year he was killed at the start of the Spanish Civil War. The setup is simple and brutal. Bernarda’s second husband dies, and she orders eight years of mourning for the whole household. Her five daughters are not allowed out, not allowed visitors, and not allowed to want anything. Of course they want things anyway.

TGA’s own materials describe the play as a critique of authoritarian control, patriarchy and social conformity. Lorca wrote it about Spain. The company is pitching it as a story that fits the Philippines now.

This production uses the adaptation by Chay Yew, the Singapore-born playwright and director, translated into Filipino by Guelan Varela-Luarca. Yew is also directing. It is the Philippine premiere of his adaptation. The play itself has been staged here before, most recently in 2019, but in a different version.

Why This Casting Is a Turn

Salonga’s history with TGA has been about taking jobs that don’t look like the Lea Salonga people expect. In 2024 she did Request sa Radyo, a wordless play, sharing the role with Dolly de Leon, with the two alternating performances. In 2025 she was the Witch in TGA’s sold-out Into the Woods, which ran at the Samsung Performing Arts Theatre in Circuit Makati. Now comes a woman who is the problem in her own house.

Salonga said she had never encountered the play before, which she sees as an advantage because she has no strong opinions or preconceptions about it. She has also said she is both excited and scared. About why the play works for a Filipino audience, she said, “It fits our culture and is timely.” The announcement comes shortly after she received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She is also part of Forgotten Island, which is still playing in cinemas, so this stage role lands in the middle of a busy stretch for her.

It is worth saying plainly what the role asks. Bernarda is not a villain in a cape. She thinks she is holding the family together, and the play’s cruelty comes from how reasonable that sounds to her. A performer whose whole career has trained audiences to side with her will have to work against that, and TGA is clearly betting that the tension is the point.

A Smaller Room

The run is set for the Power Mac Center Spotlight Blackbox Theater at Circuit Makati. A blackbox is a small, flexible performance space with no fixed stage, so the audience sits close to the action. For a play about people trapped in a house, that is a sensible choice. It also means fewer seats than a house like the Samsung Performing Arts Theatre, where Into the Woods sold out its 24 performances quickly after tickets opened. If the same demand shows up for Salonga in a smaller room, I would not wait around.

Ticket sales are expected to begin in October, and TGA subscribers get a pre-sale. Prices, the full cast and the rest of the creative team had not been announced in the coverage I found.

And Then There’s George

Bernarda Alba is only the middle of the season. TGA’s third production, in June 2027, is Sunday in the Park with George by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, also a Philippine premiere. The musical is inspired by the French painter Georges Seurat and the making of his famous canvas, and it won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1985. No casting or venue has been announced for it yet. Between a Lorca tragedy and a Sondheim musical about the cost of making art, the season’s theme of influence through love, survival and creation makes more sense than it sounded like in the press release.

For now, though, the thing to watch is February. A Lorca play in Filipino, a director who has adapted it before, and Lea Salonga in the one role where nobody will want to take her side.
