A 25-year-old Avionics Technology graduate spent his college years a few minutes from Ninoy Aquino International Airport, training on the same aircraft systems he’ll eventually fly past. Last night, before he gets anywhere near a cockpit, Rence Aldrich Perez Mendoza picked up a different kind of runway experience: he was crowned Mister Friendship International Philippines 2026.

Mendoza, a graduate of PATTS College of Aeronautics — full name Philippine Air Transport and Training Services, a Parañaque-based aviation school that’s produced technicians and engineers for Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific since 1969 — first won Ginoong Parañaque, Filipino for “Mister Parañaque,” the city-level pageant that sent him to the national stage representing his own hometown. At 5’10”, 75 kilograms, and a size 12 shoe, he’s built the profile of someone whose day job will eventually involve preflight checklists. Last night’s title hands him a different one first: the Philippines’ newest representative to Mister Friendship International, the pageant’s global mother competition built around cross-cultural friendship and goodwill, this December in Bangkok, Thailand.

The Crown He’s Actually Chasing

Here’s the more interesting problem standing between Mendoza and that title: Kurt Aguilar.

Aguilar, last year’s Mister Friendship International Philippines and the man who crowned Mendoza his successor, made it all the way to 1st Runner-Up at Mister Friendship International 2025 — close enough to see the win, not close enough to take it home. That near-miss is now the actual bar Mendoza has to clear in Bangkok, not some abstract “represent the Philippines well” mandate. The local organization has produced five Mister Friendship International Philippines titleholders since the franchise launched in 2021 — Migo De Vera, Jose Carlos Paras, Vince Drexsil Tudtud, Jansen Kenley See, and Aguilar — and by last night’s account, all five were in the room to watch the sixth get crowned. That’s not incidental. A franchise five years deep, with every one of its former kings still showing up for coronation night, is a program that’s decided continuity is part of the brand. Mendoza isn’t just following Aguilar. He’s stepping into a lineage that’s still waiting for its first outright Mister Friendship International win.

The Rest of the Night

Mendoza wasn’t the only story on stage — he was just the last one revealed. By pageant convention, the special awards go out before the main title, and by the time they were done, Kier Puno of Pampanga had already made himself the night’s other story: Best in Swimwear, Best in Barong (the Barong Tagalog, the Philippines’ traditional formal shirt, run here as a competition category the way other pageants do a “national costume” round), and Mister Photogenic — three special awards for one candidate before the major titles were even announced.

Puno’s night kept going. When the major titles came up, he added Tourism to the pile — the pageant’s second-ranked national title behind the Mister Friendship International Philippines crown itself — while Heinrich Sanchez of San Pablo City took the third, Ambassador. Best in Formal Wear went to Clark Bautista of Lubao, Pampanga — a second Pampanga name in the winners’ circle alongside Puno, which meant the province placed candidates in two of the night’s seven finalist slots. Mister Congeniality, voted by the candidates themselves, went to Ernest Augustine D. Lucila of Sorsogon — the pageant’s own barometer for who actually made 26 competitors like being in a room together for a week of pre-pageant events.

Only three national titles were crowned this year — Mister Friendship International Philippines, Ambassador, and Tourism. Unlike some past editions, which have doubled as a coronation night for other international franchises under the same organizers, this year’s finale stayed focused on MFIP alone.

What’s Next

Mendoza has roughly four months before Bangkok. What he does with them — the training, the wardrobe, whatever platform Mister Friendship International expects its delegates to campaign on — will determine whether the Philippines’ six-year streak of producing kings but not champions finally breaks, or whether Aguilar’s near-miss becomes the new ceiling instead of the exception.
