Sophia Bianca Santos Lost a Crown Over Her Age. She Just Won a Bigger One in Egypt.

She was disqualified from one Philippine crown for being too young. Two years later, Sophia Bianca Santos brought home a bigger one from Egypt.

In March 2025, Sophia Bianca Santos was told she was too young to represent the Philippines. On September 18, 2026 — September 19 in Manila — in a Red Sea resort town in Egypt, she became the second Filipina in a row to win the international crown that first rejection was supposed to lead somewhere else.

Santos was crowned Miss Elite World 2026 in Somabay, Egypt, beating a field of 36 delegates and picking up the Best in Evening Gown award along the way. Miss Elite World is an Egypt-based international pageant founded by Stefano Douaihy, drawing contestants from as many as 40 countries to the same Somabay venue most years. It’s not a franchise with Miss Universe or Miss World name recognition in the Philippines — but for the second consecutive edition, it’s the one a Filipina has actually won.

The Crown She Lost

Santos’s road to Egypt runs through a disqualification most pageant queens never have to explain. In September 2024, she won Universal Woman Philippines 2025 — a national title under ALV Pageant Circle, the pageant organization headed by Arnold Vegafria. Six months later, Vegafria announced she wouldn’t be competing internationally after all: Universal Woman’s global competition requires delegates to be between 25 and 45 years old, and Santos, born in 2004, was 20.

“After thorough review, we regret to announce that she will not be able to compete… due to the age eligibility requirement,” Vegafria said in the March 25, 2025 statement, adding that Santos would instead compete in “another prestigious international pageant” that September. The Universal Woman Philippines 2025 crown moved to Jasmine Omay, who’d been First Princess at Miss World Philippines 2024 — the same pageant where Santos herself had placed Second Princess.

Most pageants disqualify delegates for being too old. Universal Woman’s international competition set a floor instead — 25 to 45 — and it was the floor that ruled Santos out, five years under the minimum.

Kapampangan by Way of a Public Market

Santos is from Lubao, Pampanga, a province about two hours northwest of Manila whose residents are known as Kapampangan. Long before any of her national titles, she grew up helping her mother manage finances at a public market — an upbringing she’s returned to directly when asked, on an international stage, why she should represent a global brand.

“I want to share my story that I grew up in a public market to help my mom with our finances,” she said in Somabay. She’s also spoken about SOPH HEART, an advocacy she’s tied to empowering Indigenous communities, framing it around a belief that “social media can make people unite when we use it with a purpose.”

Back-to-Back, Under the Same Gatekeeper

By the time Egypt came around, Santos had spent nearly two years watching pageants from the outside — including her own Miss World Philippines 2024 batchmates, several of whom had already gone on to win Miss World Asia and titles at Reina Hispanoamericana and Face of Beauty International while she waited for a franchise to send her anywhere. “Finally! I waited for almost two years,” she said of her return to international competition. “I was watching pageants and I got envious, like I want to compete again.”

She got back in through the same organization that had turned her away. Santos was sashed Miss Elite Philippines by ALV Pageant Circle at its June 20, 2026 Coronation Gala — the same event where Vegafria’s group crowned queens for five other international franchises, including Miss Tourism International Philippines and Miss Asia Pacific International. It’s the same expansion wave that had ALV picking up seven pageant franchises at once after losing Miss Grand Philippines earlier this year — and Miss Elite Philippines, it turns out, is one of the additions. The country’s last two Miss Elite World bets, Shannon Tampon in 2022 and Juvyel Anne Saluta in 2024, were both sent by a different organization, Hiyas ng Pilipinas Foundation.

Two different Philippine organizations delivered the back-to-back wins. Hiyas ng Pilipinas sent Saluta, who made history in September 2024 as the first Filipina to win Miss Elite World and picked up a Best Smile award of her own in the same Somabay venue. ALV Pageant Circle sent Santos two years later, after adding the franchise to its expanding portfolio — the same portfolio that had ruled her too young for Universal Woman just eighteen months before.

Same Night, a Different Country

Santos wasn’t the only Filipino winning a title that week. The same night she was crowned in Egypt, three more Filipino delegates were competing more than 3,000 kilometers away in Türkiye, at Top Model of Universe 2026 — where Meiranne Gabrielle Dekit beat 23 competitors to become the first Filipina to win the pageant’s female category outright.

Between Somabay and Istanbul, four Filipino delegates won international titles within the same stretch of hours — a rare stat line for a country that, most competition weekends, is happy to land just one.
