The Sandbox Collective is bringing back its rock musical for a limited rerun at The Black Box in Rockwell. Here’s what’s confirmed so far.
The Sandbox Collective’s Spring Awakening returns in February 2027 for a limited rerun at The Black Box at The Proscenium Theater in Rockwell Center, Makati, the same venue where it ran from February 13 to March 22, 2026. That first run went on to earn 17 citations at the Gawad Buhay Awards, the Philippine theater industry’s own honors.
It was also the production that opened The Black Box as a venue, and the first staged under The Sandbox Collective’s artistic director, Sab Jose.
The Musical
Spring Awakening, with a book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik, opened on Broadway in 2006 and won eight Tony Awards in 2007, including Best Musical. Adapted from Frank Wedekind’s 1891 play and set in nineteenth-century Germany, it follows a group of teenagers trying to make sense of sex, morality and their own changing bodies while the parents, schools and church around them refuse to give straight answers, all of it set to an alternative rock score.
The Creative Team
Andrei Nikolai Pamintuan, a Gawad Buhay nominee whose credits include Muli, Lungs and Sa Wakas, returns as director, with musical direction by Ejay Yatco, whose work includes Next to Normal and Little Shop of Horrors. The company says the rerun will also support its education and advocacy programs.
The 2026 run starred Sheena Belarmino as Wendla, with Nacho Tambunting and Alex Diaz sharing the role of Melchior and Nic Chien and Omar Uddin sharing Moritz. The rerun’s cast, exact dates and ticket prices have not been announced. ElysPlanet will update this piece once they are.
