Viva Films’ MMFF 2026 entry goes back in time to find Aga Muhlach’s character before the story that ended him in the 2019 tearjerker.

The 2019 Philippine adaptation of “Miracle in Cell No. 7,” based on the 2013 Korean original and one of several remakes of that story around the world, ended with Aga Muhlach’s character dead and his daughter grown. That left no story to continue. Director Nuel Naval and Viva Films went backward instead.

A Prequel Wearing a Sequel’s Number

Screenwriter Mel Mendoza-del Rosario has described the film’s central problem plainly: how do you follow a story that already gave its lead character his ending? Her answer was to set the new film earlier in the timeline, filling in the years before the original’s tragedy. That lets Muhlach return to the role without undoing the first film’s ending.

It also makes “The 2nd Miracle in Cell No. 7” an unusual MMFF entry: a numbered sequel that works as a prequel, in a franchise where every adaptation has had to carry the same premise into a new setting — a father with an intellectual disability, wrongly imprisoned, and the daughter who grows up without him.

“We Needed Her”

The casting story Viva has pushed hardest is Jodi Sta. Maria’s. Muhlach has told it himself in press interviews, framing her as essential to the film: “We really wanted her. We needed her,” he’s said. For a franchise entry already asking audiences to accept a rearranged timeline, it signals that Sta. Maria’s role carries real weight in the story.

Rounding out the cast is Xia Vigor, who played the young daughter in the 2019 film and is now 17. Viva hasn’t said whether she returns as the same character or plays someone new, and her age doesn’t map neatly onto a story set before the original’s events. It’s the kind of detail that usually becomes clear once trailers start circulating closer to December.

What the Franchise Is Betting On

The 2019 “Miracle in Cell No. 7” was one of the highest-grossing Philippine films of its year, a tearjerker audiences went back to see again. The prequel bets that what they came back for was Muhlach’s performance and the father-daughter bond at its center. Going backward lets the franchise offer more of that without needing its lead character alive at the end.

“The 2nd Miracle in Cell No. 7” is set for the 2026 Metro Manila Film Festival, one of four entries confirmed so far in a lineup still short of its usual eight.
