Viu is taking a deliberate risk on The Way Back to You, its upcoming romantic drama series starring Kapuso actress AZ Martinez, Kapamilya actor Ralph De Leon, and Born to Shine lead Michael Sager. The streaming platform is not relying purely on standard casting calls; it is betting heavily on the residual digital footprint of Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Collab Edition, where all three leads first shared a frame inside the house.
The series, which begins principal photography in September 2026 ahead of a Fourth Quarter 2026 premiere, stars Martinez as Julia, De Leon as Tristan, and Sager as Patrick. Set against the improbable backdrop of a provincial town built around onion farming, the plot positions the trio in a love triangle that pits first love against present-day stability.
Instead of building romantic chemistry from scratch, Viu and line production team Rein Entertainment are taking pre-tested screen dynamics and placing them in a narrative sandbox. Each side of this central triangle carries its own recent history. Martinez and De Leon previously shared the screen in the mystery drama The Secrets of Hotel 88. Meanwhile, Martinez and Sager tested their romantic timing in the digital short film Opposites Almost Attract.
For the three leads, the project serves as a crucial career marker. De Leon enters the series following his Metro Manila Film Festival debut in the 2025 romance Love You So Bad, along with past turns in youth-oriented projects Zoomers and High Street. Sager continues a busy run that includes Luv Is: Caught in His Arms, the local adaptation of Shining Inheritance, and his film debut in Five Breakups and a Romance. For Martinez, who made her acting debut in 2023 as Jessica Tang in Mano Po Legacy: The Flower Sisters, the show marks her first top-billed leading assignment.
While the casting leans into reality-bred fandoms, the creative team behind the project points to higher storytelling ambitions. JP Habac is directing, bringing the same director-driven sensibility that shaped his 2017 hit I’m Drunk, I Love You. Habac’s distinct strength lies in steering familiar rom-com tropes into grounded, character-driven emotional territory.
Rein Entertainment is handling the line production, with award-winning writer and director Shugo Praico serving as Creative Head. Praico’s involvement adds weight to the project, signaling that while the narrative contains local color and humor, it aims for authentic character stakes rather than surface-level romance.
Viu initially teased the project on August 25 with anonymous cast photos before officially confirming the lineup on August 26.
