Wantawsan: A ₱1,000 Comedy Whose Own Lead Actor Skipped the Mediacon

Wantawsan Joross Gamboa

Puregold CinePanalo’s opening-day entry is a slice-of-life comedy about good intentions and small money. Its own star wasn’t there to talk about it.

A cash-strapped father gets ₱1,000 from the mayor he campaigned for. He tries to use it to buy his son a birthday meal that same day. What should be a simple errand turns into a comic test of the man’s cleverness and his principles — the kind of small-stakes moral obstacle course Filipino comedy has always been good at.

That’s “Wantawsan,” one of seven features competing at this year’s Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival, the supermarket chain’s annual production-grant program that funds each of its seven finalists with ₱5 million toward an original Filipino film. Directed by Joseph Abello, the film stars Joross Gamboa, Rita Daniela, Zion Cruz, and Alwyn Uytingco, and has been described by the festival’s own materials as a “slice of life” comedy carrying a political undertone — the ₱1,000 windfall is a favor from an elected official, not free money, and the story doesn’t let the audience forget it.

The Film Whose Own Lead Wasn’t in the Room

At the festival’s own September 18 mediacon, where directors and casts from all seven finalists gathered to present their films, Gamboa didn’t show. Abello represented “Wantawsan” on his own — actors skip promotional events for all kinds of ordinary reasons, and that’s likely all this is. Still, this close to opening day, there’s no cast quote attached to the film anywhere, from Gamboa or otherwise. Everything usable about “Wantawsan” so far is logline-level: confirmed cast, confirmed premise, a director speaking for a film whose own star hasn’t yet said a word about it publicly.

That puts “Wantawsan” in a different position than CinePanalo’s other six entries heading into opening day — most of them have had at least one cast member on record about what drew them to the project. This one is arriving on premise and casting alone, which is either a quiet start or simply a film whose real conversation hasn’t happened yet.

The rest of the cast carries its own credentials. Alwyn Uytingco, the film’s fourth-billed lead, already has a Cinema One Originals Best Actor win to his name, for 2018’s “Asuang,” on top of a comedy career that goes back to the “Ang Tanging Ina” franchise. Whatever “Wantawsan” turns out to be, that combined résumé gives it more than one actor to lean on.

A Second Zion Cruz Sighting

Cruz’s presence here is notable for a reason that has nothing to do with “Wantawsan” itself: he’s also the lead of “Apol of My Ai,” another of this year’s seven CinePanalo finalists, making him one of the rare actors with two entries in the same festival year. ElysPlanet’s own piece on “Apol of My Ai” covers his side of that story in more depth; the two films otherwise share no plot or creative team, so the connection begins and ends with Cruz’s schedule this September.

What’s Actually Known, Plainly

Strip away the absence at the mediacon, and what’s left is a workable comic premise with a recognizable Filipino setup: municipal politics, family obligation, and a small amount of money that turns out to carry real conditions attached to it. Whether the film has more to say about that political undertone than the logline suggests, or whether it’s playing the setup mostly for laughs, isn’t something the marketing has answered yet. Like the rest of the lineup, “Wantawsan” screens across the full twelve-day run rather than on a single scheduled date, so there’s no early-preview verdict to lean on either — audiences and press are finding out what it actually is at the same time, starting today.

Puregold CinePanalo 2026 opens today, September 23, and runs through October 4 across eight Metro Manila venues: Gateway Cineplex 18 Araneta (the festival hub, with exclusive Panorama Shorts screenings), TriNoma, Fairview Terraces, and Ayala Malls Feliz, Circuit, and Manila Bay, plus Market!
