The Philippines has never defended a Mister International crown. On Saturday night in Bangkok, it gets its first real chance. The clearest read on who stands in the way came a week earlier, on a swimsuit stage inside a Phuket shopping mall.
On September 19, Mister International 2026 held its King of Andaman swimsuit competition at The Bay, the events arena of Jungceylon, the shopping center in the middle of Patong Beach. More than 50 men walked it. Most of the pageant season runs on fan-page hot-picks graphics and pre-arrival buzz. This was one of the few nights when judges put actual rankings on the record.
Türkiye won it. Indonesia finished first runner-up and Mexico second. Spain took the Jungceylon Star award, and Nigeria won Best Performance. The host country’s own delegate, Waranyu “AA” Tharasiriwattanakul, made the Top 5 and advanced through the popular vote.
Phuket wasn’t the only scoreboard. Nigeria also won Best Arrival, with Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand as runners-up. Egypt took Man of Creativity, ahead of Canada and North Macedonia. And when fan voting for Mister Photogenic closed on the pageant’s official voting platform, Sri Lanka’s Shane Wijesooriya came out on top, which guarantees him a spot in the Top 20. None of it decides Saturday’s crown. But it’s the hardest evidence available heading into the final at MCC Hall, the events venue inside The Mall Lifestore Bangkapi shopping center, and it sharpens a field that fan pages have spent two weeks reshuffling.
The Man Who Swept Phuket
Ask Doğukan Navdar how to pronounce his first name, and he’ll save you the trouble. “Just call me Dodo,” he told the pageant page Pageanteras after a rehearsal. The same conversation turned up a detail that doesn’t fit the usual swimsuit-champion profile: he’s a professional League of Legends player. League of Legends is the team-based online battle game behind one of the world’s biggest esports circuits.
It hasn’t slowed him down on this side of the screen. Navdar left Phuket with three titles: King of Andaman 2026, the swimsuit competition’s main award, which came with a 30,000-baht prize; Best Beach Body; and R-MAR Resort Ambassador, a sponsor title from R-Mar Resort and Spa, the Phuket resort where delegates stayed during that leg of the pageant. No delegate in the field has banked more judged results heading into Saturday. His platform splits between stray-animal welfare, a highly visible cause in Turkish cities, and reforestation work.
What makes Navdar’s run interesting is how little history Türkiye brings with it. The country only returned to Mister International in 2025. A swimsuit sweep is a strong signal, not a guarantee. But right now, the gamer from Türkiye is the man everyone else is chasing.
The Tallest Man in the Room
Ignacio “Nacho” Monclús has been the fan-page favorite for most of the cycle, and Phuket gave him hardware to match. He took two awards there. The first was the Jungceylon Star award at the swimsuit night. The second was Mister Simon Phuket 2026, a title voted on not by judges but by the performers of Simon Cabaret, Patong’s long-running cabaret theater. Being picked by a room full of professional showpeople is its own kind of stage review.
The 26-year-old from Jaca, a mountain town in Spain’s Pyrenees, stands 1.98 meters. He works as a personal trainer, holds a sports science degree, and has a master’s in sports-injury rehabilitation. His national profile lists mountaineering, strength training, and combat sports as his hobbies. That makes his wellness-and-resilience platform read less like a pageant talking point and more like a job description.
Spain’s record here needs one clarification. Spain has won Mister International twice in a row, in 2023 and 2024, but both wins came at the separate, Philippine-based pageant of the same name. That pageant split from the Thailand-based organization after founder Alan Sim died in 2022. In the Bangkok edition Monclús is competing in, Spain’s recent best is a Top 6 finish in 2024. A win on Saturday would be a first for the country at this version of the crown.
The Engineer Named After a Miss World
Indonesia’s I Gede Aiswarya Pandit Kartika, “Ais” to fans, arrives from Bali with the most unusual résumé in the field. The 23-year-old is an automation, electrical, and software engineer who also competes as a professional athlete and works as a model. At the pageant’s orientation day, he explained his first name: his father, a devoted Bollywood fan, named him after actress Aishwarya Rai, Miss World 1994. He calls the name a blessing for this journey. He has used his speaking rounds to push for emergency relief and international attention on wildfires in Indonesia, and his national costume shoot has been one of the most widely shared images of the cycle.
The results back up the buzz. Kartika finished first runner-up at King of Andaman and was one of three runners-up for Best Arrival. Indonesia also has recent form: Glenn Victor Sutanto finished second runner-up in 2024.
The Chasing Pack
Behind the top three, rankings depend heavily on which pageant page you read.
- Sri Lanka’s Shane Wijesooriya is the only man already guaranteed a Top 20 spot, after winning the Mister Photogenic fan vote.
- India’s Aaryan Chawla has topped several early fan leaderboards.
- Brazil’s Eduardo Castillo keeps showing up in South American analysts’ Top 5s.
- Mexico’s Andrés Briseño has the Phuket result to point to: second runner-up in swimsuit.
- Nigeria’s Gideon Ebosetale Abure won both Best Performance and Best Arrival. His country won its first Mister International title in 2024 through Nwajagu Samuel.
- Malaysia’s Mohamad Hafizzi stood out at the opening press presentation. Malaysia is back this year after skipping 2025.
- Korea’s Jung Gyu Park belongs on the radar on track record alone. Korea won in 2017 and finished second runner-up behind Bondad last year.
The Filipino Question
That brings it back to the Philippines. John Wayne Alba is 22, a Filipino-Italian car craftsman based in Milan. He won his sash through Mister Pilipinas Worldwide in April, representing Calamba, Laguna. Kirk Bondad’s win last September was the country’s second Mister International title, after Neil Perez in 2014. It set up something no Filipino man has managed at this pageant: winning it two years running.
Alba didn’t place on the Phuket swimsuit night, but he does have a result on the board: he finished among the three runners-up for Best Arrival, alongside Indonesia and Thailand. The rest of his case rests on what analysts have seen. Filipino analyst pages, including The Crown Slayer and Junj the Great, have singled out his charisma, his interview presence, and how cleanly he executes onstage. Those are the parts of the competition that don’t show up in a swimsuit ranking. On Saturday he’ll be judged on all of it at once. He joins a broader slate of Filipino men competing internationally this year.
How Saturday Works
Fan voting still matters. The pageant’s official voting platform covers three categories: Mister Photogenic, Mister Influencer, and Mister People’s Choice. Photogenic has closed, and Wijesooriya’s win sends him straight to the Top 20. The five highest vote-getters in that round (Sri Lanka, Côte d’Ivoire, Iraq, Singapore, and Honduras) also get a promotional boost in the People’s Choice race. Alba isn’t among them, but Influencer and People’s Choice are both still open, and that’s where Filipino fans can still move the needle. The top vote-getters advance to the Top 20, and the People’s Choice winner can go on to the Top 6.
