The Department of Tourism (DOT) spent this summer quietly assembling a full bench of Filipino pop-culture ambassadors, one appointment at a time. Two are already official. A third is the one everybody’s actually waiting on.
BINI and SB19, Back to Back
BINI was named tourism ambassador first, on July 3, formalized during a visit to the DOT’s Manila office on the heels of the group’s own Coachella milestone. SB19 followed on July 26 — timed, deliberately or not, to a genuinely historic stretch for the group: the first Filipino act to throw a ceremonial first pitch at a Major League Baseball game, then four days later the first to headline the Lollapalooza main stage in Chicago. We covered that Lollapalooza debut in detail here.
Tourism Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay’s stated logic for both picks wasn’t just reach — it was specifically about the diaspora. She’s pointed to Filipino-Americans who grew up watching SB19 online now booking flights home, some for the first time in years, just to see the group perform live. “SB19 is giving people real reasons to visit the Philippines,” she said of the appointment. It’s a bet that a government tourism budget could never manufacture that kind of pull on its own — an unpaid fan in another country organizing a tribute, or a diaspora Filipino planning a trip around a concert date, does work no ad campaign buys outright.
The Less Flashy Half: “Discover More to Love”
Underneath the celebrity wave is a more structural move. In late June, DOT launched “Discover More to Love,” a domestic tourism campaign unveiled at a tourism expo in Laguna, bundling more than 3,000 travel deals — discounts up to 70% from over 70 partner hotels, plus airlines, booking platforms, and payment providers — running through November 2026. Officials were careful to frame it as a complement to the existing “Love the Philippines” brand rather than a replacement, and the target is explicitly domestic: Filipinos who haven’t seen their own country yet, not the international travelers the department’s arrival numbers are actually measured against. DOT has cited domestic tourism as supporting close to 7.7 million jobs and roughly P3 trillion in spending in 2025 — real economic weight behind what could otherwise read as just a marketing refresh.

The Eala Question
Here’s where it gets interesting. Philippine media reported as early as July 4 that DOT was “eyeing” Filipino tennis player Alexandra “Alex” Eala for the same ambassador list — but unlike BINI and SB19, that appointment has never actually been confirmed.
That non-confirmation is worth revisiting now. In the month since that report, Eala won her first WTA Tour-level title at the DC Open, beating five top-10 opponents on the way there, with “Filipino” attached to her name in wire copy from Washington to wherever she plays next. She’s currently ranked inside the WTA’s top 20 for the first time in her career, with the US Open still ahead of her this month.
If the DOT is genuinely chasing ambassadors who already do the job without being asked — the same logic behind naming BINI and SB19 — Eala is arguably the cleanest case yet. Nobody would need to write her talking points. She’s already been making the pitch herself, match after match, without a title or a script. It raises the obvious question underneath this whole roster: who else does the department actually need as the face of this campaign, when the person already doing the work — unpaid, unofficial, every time she steps on court — has been Eala all along?
Does Any of This Move the Needle?
A louder ambassador roster and a domestic discount platform are both genuinely smart moves. Neither one, though, touches the number this story keeps circling back to: the gap between the Philippines’ international arrivals and regional neighbors like Malaysia, which pulled in over 40 million visitors in 2025, or Thailand, which cleared 30 million. “Discover More to Love” is explicit about being a domestic play. BINI, SB19, and a potential Eala appointment can pull diaspora Filipinos and international fandoms toward a visit, and that’s real, measurable upside — but none of it is infrastructure. None of it is an airport with enough capacity, a ferry system that connects to the rail, or a supply chain that can absorb a tourism surge without prices spiking against the people who actually live there.
A stronger marketing bench can be part of a turnaround. It isn’t the whole turnaround. Worth watching over the next few cycles whether this translates into the international arrival numbers actually moving — or whether it ends up being a louder, better-produced version of the same gap.
The Roster So Far
BINI — named tourism ambassador July 3, 2026.
SB19 — named tourism ambassador July 26, 2026; performed Lollapalooza (Chicago) July 30, first Filipino act to do so.
Alex Eala — reportedly “eyed” for the role as of July 4, 2026; not yet confirmed. Currently WTA top 20, fresh off her first tour-level title at the DC Open.
“Discover More to Love” — domestic travel-deals campaign, launched June 26, 2026; 3,000+ offers from 70+ hotel partners plus airlines and booking platforms; runs through November 2026 at tourism.gov.ph.
We’ll keep this roster updated as new names get added — and if Eala’s appointment does become official, that’s a story on its own.
