Maria Ysabella “Bella” Ysmael has already tried the Miss Universe Philippines route twice. This time, she’s taking a different road to an international crown, and the destination is Vietnam.

The Taguig-based model and ballet instructor became the Philippines’ representative to Miss Cosmo 2026 after finishing in the Top 7 of Miss Universe Philippines 2026 — not a consolation prize so much as the latest turn in a pageant career that’s been unfolding since 2020. And this year, her campaign is arriving at an unusually interesting moment for the young pageant: with the Miss Cosmo organization now expanding into a men’s competition, the Philippines isn’t just sending a woman to compete anymore. It’s sending both.

Two Tries, a Near-Miss, and a New Door

Ysmael’s Miss Cosmo story didn’t begin with Miss Cosmo. In 2020, she entered Miss Universe Philippines representing Parañaque and finished first runner-up to eventual winner Rabiya Mateo — a result close enough to leave her, by her aunt’s own public account at the time, feeling like the crown had been within reach. Six years later, she came back, this time representing Taguig, and made the Top 7 — a finalist finish, but not another shot at the Miss Universe Philippines crown itself.

An international door opened instead. At The Miss Philippines Coronation Ball in May — the ceremony that hands out the franchise’s various international assignments to that year’s finalists — Ysmael was officially appointed Miss Cosmo Philippines 2026. Reigning Miss Cosmo Yolina Lindquist and the 2025 first runner-up, Chelsea Fernandez, were both in Manila for the handoff, which gave the moment a bit more weight than a routine crown transfer: Fernandez had just delivered the closest the Philippines has come to winning Miss Cosmo since the pageant launched in 2024, and Ysmael was being asked, in effect, to finish what she started.

The Cosmo organization has framed the appointment as a continuation of that momentum. It leaves Ysmael with something pageant contestants rarely inherit this directly — a recent, specific benchmark to chase rather than an abstract shot at history.

More Than a Crown

There’s a case that Ysmael isn’t starting from scratch, either. She’s trained in ballet since childhood and has built a career around it as a model and instructor, co-founding and teaching at Milota Ballet; she also runs her own sunglasses label, YSLE Society, launched in 2025. Her public profile has increasingly folded in mental wellness and personal development work aimed at young women.

Then there’s the family name. Ysmael is the niece of Margie Moran-Floriendo, who won the Miss Universe crown for the Philippines in 1973, and the granddaughter of veteran actress Marita Zobel. It would be easy to make that the whole story. It shouldn’t be — Ysmael’s first Miss Universe Philippines run came six years before her second, and the international assignment only followed after that. It reads less like a famous surname opening a door than like someone who kept finding new doors to walk through on her own.

Cosmo Adds a Mister

The timing gets more interesting when you look at what’s happening alongside Ysmael’s run. This year, Mister Cosmo — the men’s counterpart to Miss Cosmo — began operating for the first time, through a licensing arrangement with Mister Pilipinas Worldwide, the multi-title national pageant that also picks the country’s representatives to Mister Supranational, Mister International, and several other men’s franchises.

The Philippines’ first Mister Cosmo representative is Lorenzo Mari “Enzo” Bonoan, a fitness coach and entrepreneur who was named Mister Pilipinas Cosmo 2026 out of this year’s Mister Pilipinas Worldwide competition, after a surprise, last-minute addition to that pageant’s title lineup. He’s no stranger to this kind of company — Bonoan was also a 2024 Century Tuna Superbods finalist, competing alongside his wife, Julia Sucgang-Bonoan, as the fitness search’s first married couple. Mister Cosmo is his first international assignment after multiple attempts on the national stage — a different résumé than Ysmael’s, but a similar shape of story: someone who kept showing up until a door opened.

So the Philippine Cosmo story now runs on two tracks at once. Ysmael is chasing the country’s first Miss Cosmo crown. Bonoan is helping stand up its first Mister Cosmo chapter from scratch.

An Organization Building Something Bigger

Miss Cosmo is a relative newcomer in a crowded international pageant field — founded in Vietnam in 2024, and only now heading into its third season. Its short history has leaned hard into combining competition with tourism, cultural exchange, and lifestyle programming, rather than treating coronation night as the whole show.

Adding a men’s competition is the clearest sign yet of where the organization wants to go. At an August 18 press conference in Ho Chi Minh City launching Miss Cosmo 2026’s third season, the reigning queens — Lindquist, Fernandez, 2024 winner Ketut Permata Juliastri, and 2024 runner-up Mook Karnruethai Tassabut — appeared alongside seventeen Miss Cosmo hopefuls and seven Mister Cosmo delegates, with more national franchises for the men’s side still being finalized. Tassabut, notably, has moved from competing in the pageant to a role helping build out its new men’s counterpart — a small but telling sign of an organization trying to grow its own pipeline rather than just its guest list.

Vietnam Is Part of the Pitch

Miss Cosmo 2026’s activities are set to run from December 25, 2026 through January 16, 2027, centered on Nha Trang and Khánh Hòa Province, with the final night scheduled for Tri Nguyen Island. That’s not incidental — the Cosmo model has never been only about what happens under the lights on coronation night. Interviews, cultural activities, tourism events, and social media programming stretch the competition into a weeks-long production, turning the host destination into part of the story rather than just the address on the invitation. For a country like the Philippines, which treats pageantry as both sport and cultural export, that’s familiar territory.

Ysmael’s road here has been anything but a straight line: a first-runner-up finish in 2020, a Top 7 in 2026, neither one the Miss Universe Philippines crown she was chasing at the time. But neither ended her story — the second finish simply pointed her toward a different competition, one that’s still figuring out what it wants to become. She arrives in Vietnam with ballet, two national pageant runs, and Chelsea Fernandez’s near-win still fresh enough to chase. If she wins, it won’t just be the Philippines’ first Miss Cosmo title. It’ll be proof that trying a route twice, then finding another one, can still get you to the crown.
