Marian Arellano Traded the Bigger Sash for the One That Actually Makes Sense

On May 2, in the final question-and-answer round of Miss Universe Philippines 2026, Marian Arellano was asked why it’s still worth representing a country a lot of Filipinos are frustrated with right now. She didn’t reach for a line about resilience or paradise beaches. She said: “I grew up with an OFW mother, and my father is a security guard. With this, I learned to be independent… And I believe this independence molded me as an empowered Filipina.”

It’s the kind of answer that’s supposed to sound rehearsed and doesn’t. Arellano didn’t win that night — La Union’s Bea Millan-Windorski did, and will represent the Philippines at Miss Universe 2026 in Puerto Rico. But Arellano’s Top 7 finish was the best a Tarlac delegate has ever managed at the national pageant, ahead of Sasha Lacuna’s Top 24 the year before. Eight days later, she picked up a different crown entirely, and it turned out to be a better fit than the one everyone had been watching for.

The Girl From Pura, Before Any of This

Arellano was born in Pura, a small municipality in Tarlac, to an Ilocano family — Ilocano was her first language at home, and in an interview with Aces and Queens, she named her Ilocano accent as her biggest insecurity. It’s an unusually candid detail for a pageant bio, and it tracks with the rest of her story: nothing about Arellano’s rise reads like it was built for a national stage from day one.

She played volleyball growing up. She studied marketing. In 2024, she graduated magna cum laude from Tarlac State University (TSU) — a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, major in Marketing Management — while holding a scholarship from the Pura local government unit. Her first pageant title wasn’t national either: she won Binibining Kanlahi 2025, Tarlac’s provincial pageant, on March 6, 2025, representing her own hometown. That win was the ticket to Miss Universe Philippines, not a side credential to it.

A Different Kind of Runner-Up

The Miss Universe Philippines organization runs a sister operation called The Miss Philippines — the umbrella that hands runners-up and standout finalists off to seven other international pageant franchises instead of running separate national searches for each one. In late April, ahead of the main coronation, Arellano was named one of the “Queens of Amorap” at a special swimsuit presentation in Misamis Occidental, alongside five other Top 7 finalists. Then came the Top 7 finish itself, and the Barong-inspired evening gown by Rian Fernandez — the same designer behind Miss Universe 2022 winner R’Bonney Gabriel’s gown — that Arellano wore on the main stage.

Eight days after that, on May 10, the actual assignment came down at The Miss Philippines’ Coronation Ball at City of Dreams Manila: Miss Tourism World Philippines 2026, sending Arellano to compete internationally in China later this year. It’s worth being precise here, because the name invites confusion — Miss Tourism World is a separate franchise from Miss Tourism Worldwide, a different pageant altogether that a different Filipina delegate won this year under a different organization. Arellano’s title runs through Empire Philippines, the same group that ran Miss Universe Philippines itself.

The Marketing Degree Wasn’t Just for Show

What makes the assignment interesting isn’t the sash. It’s that Arellano’s actual résumé lines up with it. Her national advocacy during Miss Universe Philippines was framed around empowering rural youth through education and digital access — an idea she said was rooted in growing up outside a major city herself. ElysPlanet’s own coverage of The Miss Philippines lineup described her Miss Tourism World platform in more specific terms: business empowerment, helping small entrepreneurs with branding and promotion — a direction pulled straight from a marketing degree, not bolted onto one after the fact.

Tourism, at its most useful, isn’t really about beautiful places. It’s about who gets to decide what a place says about itself, and whether the people living there see any of the benefit from being seen. That’s a more specific job description than most pageant “advocacy” slides ever get, and it happens to be one Arellano was already qualified for before anyone put a sash on her.

She’s also no stranger to a runway outside pageantry — in 2025, she made her fashion debut at the 9th Calgary International Fashion and Arts Week in Manila, wearing a piece by designer Odelon Simpao, the same designer who later dressed her for the Miss Universe Philippines preliminaries.

What Comes Next Is the Actual Test

Arellano is 23 now, heading to a competition in China with a marketing degree, a hometown crown, and a national Top 7 finish behind her — but Miss Tourism World isn’t graded on the same rubric as Miss Universe Philippines. She isn’t trying to prove she belongs among the country’s best pageant candidates anymore. She has to sell a country to strangers without flattening it into a postcard, and make people curious about places that aren’t Manila or Boracay.

That’s a harder job than it sounds, and it’s the one her actual background was already pointing toward — a scholar from a rural municipality whose degree is in getting people to pay attention to things that don’t already have a marketing budget. The bigger crown went to somebody else. The one that fits her story went to Pura.
