Andrea Endicio was supposed to be somewhere else this month. Instead, she’s headed to Dubai on September 15, carrying a sash that didn’t exist for the Philippines until she was handed it.

Endicio — a licensed pharmacist from Candelaria, Quezon, and a Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of Santo Tomas — is the inaugural Miss Polo Universe Philippines. Mutya ng Pilipinas (MNP), the country’s second-longest-running national pageant after Binibining Pilipinas, sent her off through a formal sashing ceremony at the CWC Design Center in Makati City. She leaves for the United Arab Emirates to compete in Miss Polo Universe 2026, a non-swimsuit pageant built around advocacy work and public speaking, now only in its second year. Grand Coronation Night falls on September 26 at the Movenpick Grand Al Bustan Convention Center in Dubai, where Endicio will be the first Filipina ever to stand on that stage.

A Title She Lost, and the One That Replaced It

Endicio’s path to Dubai runs through a crown she no longer holds. At Mutya ng Pilipinas 2025, held last November at the Playtime Filoil Centre in San Juan, she took home the Photogenic award and was named MNP’s Miss Tourism International Philippines 2026 — the delegate title to a Malaysia-founded pageant that had drawn its Filipino representatives from Mutya’s roster since Miss Tourism International’s 1994 debut. The Philippines is the pageant’s best-performing country by a wide margin, with six wins since 1994 — most recently in 2024, with Liana Barrido — which made the pipeline worth protecting. That protection ended earlier this year, when ALV Pageant Circle — the pageant management company run by talent manager Arnold Vegafria — acquired the Philippine franchise for Miss Tourism International, leaving Endicio’s title, and her ticket abroad, in limbo.

MNP president Cory Quirino gave her a different stage instead: the newly launched Miss Polo Universe Philippines. “We continue with our commitment for our queens to compete overseas,” Quirino said while sashing Endicio at the send-off. It reads differently coming from Quirino specifically — she built, and eventually gave up, the Philippine license for Miss World between 2011 and 2017, so she has her own history with what a lost franchise costs an organization’s outbound pipeline.

A Format Built for Speaking, Not Swimsuits

Miss Polo Universe skips the swimsuit round in favor of advocacy work and public speaking — a format Endicio says fits her directly. “I am overjoyed, mixed with a little anxiety,” she said of the appointment. She’s already floated a possible platform pivot if she wins, saying she’d look to introduce women’s-empowerment messaging into the pageant’s Middle Eastern setting — though she’s framed that ambition carefully, saying she intends to respect the region’s own cultural norms around women first.

Endicio has been building a pageant résumé since 2019, including a run at Miss World Philippines 2024. Miss Polo Universe Philippines is a brand-new local franchise, launched, per the organization’s own announcement, “in collaboration with Mutya ng Pilipinas,” and built specifically around Endicio as its first titleholder — not a title reassigned from an existing one.

What MNP Is Really Protecting

MNP has run for 54 editions without the international reach of Binibining Pilipinas. Losing a title as established as Miss Tourism International to ALV Pageant Circle would ordinarily cost an organization real momentum. MNP moved fast to limit that cost, standing up an entirely new outbound pipeline within months and handing it to the exact delegate who’d just been publicly displaced by the previous loss. That keeps MNP’s overseas presence intact at a moment when the rest of its franchise map is visibly in motion.

Miss Polo Universe itself is still finding its footing internationally — this is only its second edition, with no track record yet for the Philippines to defend or build on. For MNP, the priority right now is keeping a Filipina on an international stage at all, regardless of which one.

Coronation night is September 26. Endicio is already the first Filipina to compete at Miss Polo Universe, regardless of the outcome. MNP hasn’t announced broadcast or livestream details yet; updates are expected on the organization’s social channels as the date approaches.
